Navigating the Chevening Scholarship Application Journey: Mastering the Small, but Critical Application Details.

Introduction: My Journey to the Chevening Scholarship

Dear readers,

Chevening has been an incredible opportunity that has profoundly influenced my personal and professional growth. As I pen up this blog, I am filled with gratitude for the doors it has opened for me. You've made the right choice to pursue this avenue of growth, and I assure you that Chevening will exceed your expectations. I wish you all the best in exploring this blog.

It's important to acknowledge that this blog contains a wealth of information to absorb. Be sure to give yourself the time and opportunity to read it in manageable portions. There's no need to rush through everything in a single sitting. Take your time to digest the content and absorb the valuable insights it offers at your own pace.
All the information shared here is solely based on my personal experiences and opinions. None of the information provided represents the official opinion of the Chevening Scholarship program. I strongly encourage you to explore the official Chevening Scholarship website for the most accurate and up-to-date information: Chevening Scholarship Website.

I will share both the highlights and setbacks of my application process, beginning with the initial rejections in 2017 & 2018, the rejection at the interview stage in 2019, and concluding with my ultimate success in 2020. Each stage has learnings that I took to the next stage.

Background Story:

Upon completing my undergraduate studies at Teofilo Kisanji University, I was driven by the desire to explore international education, and the United Kingdom, known for its world-class education, became my goal. However, it's important to note that my university, Teofilo Kisanji, was not widely recognized in Tanzania, especially when compared to prestigious institutions offering programs like BSc. Environmental Sciences or Environmental Engineering.

Additionally, as the pioneering group to enroll in the BSc. Environmental Studies program, we faced significant limitations when it came to accessing resources and facilities. I shared the doubts of some classmates who questioned our competitiveness in the job market. Our concerns were exacerbated when our university changed the course name from BSc. Environmental Management to BSc. Environmental Studies, which led us to believe that the altered title might affect our career prospects. Looking back, we may have been overly concerned. On top of that, I also recall the existence of university rankings during that time, in which my university consistently ranked poorly. I have my reservations about the credibility of these rankings' metrics of measurements. These rankings further fueled our concerns, making us doubt the brightness of our future prospects.

If you're hesitant about applying for the Chevening scholarship due to factors like your previous university's reputation, rankings or program nomenclature, it's crucial to recognize that these concerns need not deter you. I encourage you to put aside these doubts and pursue your aspirations. The truth remains, when you dare to dream big, you have the potential to symbolize something greater than your previous university's recognition or a program title. Despite earning my BSc in Environmental Studies at Teofilo Kisanji University, I embarked on a path to achieve a Master of Science in Water Supply, Sanitation, and Health Engineering at University of Leeds. In the following sections, I'll unravel the essential elements of a successful Chevening scholarship application, providing the guidance needed to realize your dreams.

My Personal Journey to the Application

2017: First Chevening Encounter
In the year 2027, my initial encounter with the Chevening Scholarship unfolded. My introduction to this prestigious scholarship opportunity was facilitated by the Scholarship Position, a reputable online scholarship search engine accessible via their website at https://scholarship-positions.com/. For those who have a keen interest in exploring international opportunities and scholarships, I strongly recommend visiting this website, as it consistently provides authentic and valuable scholarship information. It is imperative to exercise caution and discernment when navigating online platforms, as the internet is rife with fraudulent schemes. While I hope to explore this topic further in a separate blog post, the focus of this discourse remains centered on the Chevening Scholarship.

Upon completing my BSc degree, I found myself in a position where I lacked the necessary work experience, comprehensive information, and a clear academic direction. Additionally, I was devoid of a network of individuals well-versed in the intricacies of the Chevening Scholarship application process who could have provided invaluable guidance and support. Despite these challenges, I decided to press forward and submit my application for the Chevening Scholarship. Regrettably, the outcome was unequivocally unsuccessful.

As a rule of thumb, I firmly believe that the capacity to persevere and persist in one's pursuit, even in the face of failure, constitutes one's greatest strength on the path to achieving success. This message is particularly relevant for those who have previously applied for this scholarship and deemed unsucessful. It is crucial not to underestimate its importance. When faced with failure, it's essential to adopt a mindset of openness, engage in candid self-assessment, and embark on a profound reflection regarding potential shortcomings or any crucial elements inadvertently omitted from the application. Regrettably, some applicants, upon receiving an unsuccessful email, may attribute their rejection to factors such as political affiliations, gender, race, or nationality, overlooking the critical need for a thorough introspection to discern the actual gaps in their applications.

The invaluable lesson I carried into my next application in 2018 was the importance of accumulating relevant work experience, and proactively seeking comprehensive information about the scholarship. I diligently explored every facet of the Chevening website, joined Facebook groups tailored for applicants, and proactively reached out to alumni for guidance and insights.

2018: Second Encounter
In my 2018 Chevening scholarship application, I had amassed one and a half years of work experience, during which I had worked with Raleigh Tanzania on their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) initiatives (further details available in my other post: https://oscarbalongo.blogspot.com/2023/09/lifelong-impact-stories-of-friends-who.html).During this period, I had secured three conditional offers from my preferred universities and I had also secured three professional recommenders. Additionally, I had established a robust network of professionals and friends who played a pivotal role in proofreading my essays to ensure their coherence and quality.

It's crucial to note that Chevening mandates applicants to possess a minimum of two years, equivalent to 2,800 hours, of work experience. This criterion is of utmost importance, as any shortfall, even by a minute, can result in disqualification. On the Chevening website, this requirement is explicitly stated as follows: "Applicants must meet the minimum work experience requirement before submitting their application. Applicants whose work experience amounts to less than the minimum amount will not be considered for an award." Among various factors contributing to my unsuccessful 2018 application, falling short of this work experience threshold was the foremost. Further insights into this pivotal aspect will be elaborated upon in subsequent sections of this post. I will also provide direct links that will guide you to specific and detailed information within each section of the Chevening Scholarship application.

The invaluable lessons I carried into my next stage were twofold. Firstly, I recognized the importance of accumulating sufficient and relevant work experience to fully meet the stringent two-year work experience criterion. Secondly, I learned that possessing conditional or unconditional letters of acceptance from three preferred university courses does not provide an advantage in the Chevening application process.
According to the Chevening website, applicants are required to select three course choices when applying for a Chevening Award, offering alternative options in case they are not granted admission to their first choice. Interestingly, it's possible to research these three courses independently and apply for them separately after submitting the Chevening Application, with a distinct deadline for the course application outcome.

2019: Third Encounter
During this application window, I meticulously fulfilled all of the Chevening Technical eligibility criteria. This encompassed meeting the stringent two-year work experience requirement, selecting my three preferred courses of study, securing recommendations from three qualified individuals, and, notably, ensuring the quality of my essays by having them thoroughly proofread by trusted friends.

Finally, after two years of relentless effort and dedication, I received the long-awaited feedback that I had eagerly anticipated. The message read, "We are pleased to inform you that your application has progressed to the next stage of the selection process. You have been selected by the British High Commission Dar es Salaam to attend the interview." I can assure you that, for me, someone who had applied for this scholarship twice before without advancing to the next stage, the surge of dopamine in my brain was comparable to the elation felt by someone who had already secured the scholarship.

Regrettably, my journey with the Chevening scholarship concluded at the interview stage without further progression. This underscores why self reflection is so so important. It demands the courage to give yourself kind but constructive, critical and honest feedback on where you need to improve. It requires a resolute commitment to objectively evaluate oneself and resist the temptation of making excuses that might deter you from pursuing your dreams. I firmly believe that this principle truth in many, if not all, aspects of life.
Many of the insights and feedback regarding my interview experience and the reasons for my unsuccessful outcome will be shared in subsequent posts, possibly closer to the Chevening Interview Timelines. However, I cannot stress enough the critical importance of carefully selecting the right individuals for your recommendations. While it may not be the only determinant of success in securing the scholarship, I cannot underestimate how significantly it can impact your application. I struggled to get hold of two of my recommenders which really was a frustration and a time. Therefore, I learned that it is very important to plan ahead and select your right recommenders. They should be people who knows and can talk about your professional qualifications and your character but most importantly the need to be people are are responsive and proactive to emails, and should be people who can dedicate time to actually write you a good recommendation.

It's indeed imaginable that some applicants may have performed exceptionally well during their interviews, only to have their progress hindered by less-than-adequate recommendations from their chosen recommenders. The thought of investing considerable effort into the application process, only to be let down by a recommender's lapse for various reasons, can be disheartening. This is precisely why it's crucial to select recommenders you trust and notify them well in advance about your application, ensuring they are committed to providing high-quality recommendations. This proactive approach can make a significant difference in the success of your application.

2020: Forth Encounter
In 2020, the pivotal year arrived as I was selected among the 15 Tanzanian awardee. This is the juncture where some individuals might have contemplated pursuing alternative paths after facing rejection thrice. The exhaustion of the application process, the task of soliciting recommendations, applying to three courses, and seeking essay proofreading assistance may have taken its toll. However, my perspective was distinct—I approached the application process with the same level of enthusiasm. I attribute this enduring enthusiasm to my ability to consistently monitor my progress and pinpoint areas for improvement over the years.
One of the most challenging but necessary steps is setting aside one's ego to learn from self-reflection. We often aspire to construct a certain image in our minds, but it's essential to genuinely listen to our inner reflective voice and draw wisdom from there. The primary focus should always be on nurturing a constructive self-opinion and incorporating suggestions into future endeavors.

The collective wisdom acquired from reflecting on my past applications, along with the insights gained from an unsuccessful interview the previous year, instilled a deep sense of assurance within me. As I exited the interview room, I carried an unwavering conviction that this time around, I would secure the Chevening scholarship and I was right. I look forward to sharing a more comprehensive account of my interview experiences in a separate post.

Navigating the Chevening Website: A Comprehensive Guide

This section holds tremendous importance, and in my opinion, it constitutes the most vital part of this blog, deserving your attentive consideration because it contains essential information. While it's common for many applicants to enthusiastically initiate their Chevening scholarship applications as soon as the application window opens, I strongly advise you to invest ample time in meticulously exploring all the updated information related to the Chevening Scholarship provided on their official website. Allocate a significant portion of your time to gather precise information from dependable sources and knowledgeable individuals.
As the title of this blog suggests, the key to understanding the Chevening Scholarship lies in the often-overlooked small details, details that many applicants tend to ignore or may not stumble upon in their research.
It's crucial to keep in mind that information, no matter how abundant, remains meaningless unless you possess the skill to comprehend and apply it effectively. If you come across any information on the website that seems confusing or unclear to you, don't hesitate to seek clarification. There are multiple ways to resolve your doubts. Firstly, you can explore the Frequent Asked Questions (FAQs) section. Alternatively, you can reach out to alumni who possess direct experience with the Chevening Scholarship, or you can contact the Chevening Secretariat through the "Contact Us" section, specifically by selecting "General Enquiries." These resources are readily available to assist you in gaining clarity on any uncertainties you may encounter.

If you have navigated through the Chevening website, you likely encountered a section, as depicted in the screenshot below, underscoring the critical significance of conducting thorough research. Drawing from my experiences with other fellowship and award applications, where one can respond to essay questions without delving deeply into the intricacies of the award, Chevening stands in stark contrast. I can confidently assert that achieving success in the Chevening Scholarship application is virtually impossible without thoroughly reading and understanding the information available on their website.

This is a testament to the amount of time and effort Chevening Application demands for thorough research. In my view, the research phase often takes longer than the actual application process. This is because you must meticulously attend to the minute details provided on their website to craft a strong application. The ultimate quality of your application is the result of compiling and assimilating hundreds, if not thousands, of these tiny details gathered during your research. Selecting Your Three Qualifying Courses: A Strategic Approach

If you are fully aware of your career prospective, then that is great, if you're not, that is also fine. My advice on this section is do a good reflection of what you really want to do. You don’t want to waste this valuable opportunity that many are looking for just to go abroad and do something that you don't really know if that is what you want. First is a waste of tax payers money, but also it is a wastage of your time.

For instance, I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in engineering, primarily because of the significant impact engineers have on public health and safety. Civil engineers, in particular, have been credited with saving more lives than doctors, largely through their contributions to providing clean water and sewage systems. It's fascinating to note that engineers, through innovations like John Snow's pioneering work in epidemiology, played a pivotal role in identifying the source of a cholera outbreak in London in 1854. By designing and maintaining clean water and sanitation systems, engineers have effectively prevented the spread of waterborne diseases, ultimately saving more lives than doctors can solely through treatment. Engineering solutions form the backbone of modern healthcare infrastructure, underscoring their indispensable role in preserving and enhancing public health. While this topic is indeed intriguing, it's a conversation for another day. My main point here is the importance of having a compelling and concrete reason for your choice of course. Explore into your introspection, ensuring that your chosen field aligns with the future you envision. What critical problem are you genuinely passionate about solving?

I must emphasize that pursuing an MSc degree in the UK presents a remarkable opportunity to transition your career from one field to another. For example, despite studying Environmental Studies during my BSc, which is not an engineering course, I successfully gained admission to the MSc (Eng) Water Supply, Sanitation and Health Engineering program at the University of Leeds. In all instances, your university of choice will require you to compose a motivation letter as part of your application. This is where you must articulate the story of why you wish to study your chosen course and explain the rationale behind your career transition.

All the information you require regarding Chevening Eligible Courses can be accessed here: Chevening Eligible Courses

My advice here is to focus on courses that are included in the list of Chevening Scholarship Sponsored Courses. If you have plans to pursue an MBA, it's important to note that there is a fee cap imposed on MBA programs. This means that you will be responsible for covering any additional costs beyond £22,000.

It's important to understand that you are not allowed to enroll in pre-sessional courses to fulfill your university's English language requirements or any other conditions of a university offer as a Chevening scholar. Therefore, it's crucial to carefully choose a course for which you meet the English language requirements based on your research. However, it's worth mentioning that UK universities can be flexible in certain cases.

For instance, if your English test had expired, you can communicate your situation to the university. In my case, when I applied to the University of Leeds multiple times, they requested my English test, which had expired a year earlier. I wrote to them confidently, explaining that my BSc course was taught and assessed in English, and my university transcripts and certificates are in English. Additionally, I obtained a recommendation letter from my undergraduate university confirming my English proficiency, which I shared with the University of Leeds Admission team. All of this communication happened through email, and they accepted my case. The key takeaway here is to communicate your needs clearly and not let fear hold you back. Remember that different universities have different requirements, so it's essential to be proactive and persistent in pursuing your goals.

Online Application: Step-by-Step Guide

First of all, you need to read this section of the Chevening Website: Online Application System Guide
The initial step in the Chevening Scholarship application process is to create your account. It's important to use an email address to which you have access, as this email will serve as the primary means of communication for all subsequent stages of the application. In case you encounter difficulties regarding the online application system, use this link to ask for help: Technical support for the Online Application System (OAS).

See the Chevening step by step guide for how to prepare you application here: https://www.chevening.org/news/how-to-prepare-your-chevening-application/

It's absolutely crucial to pay close attention to all the questions in the Chevening Scholarship application. While the essay questions are significant, it's important to note that inaccuracies or omissions in your personal details, information about your nationality, criminal status, education background, and work experience, including the number of hours worked per week, can also potentially disqualify applicants. Thorough and accurate completion of all sections of the application is essential to ensure your eligibility for the scholarship.

Crafting Compelling Chevening Essays: The Art of Alignment

I acknowledge that it might become exhausting to read the same blog post repeatedly. Therefore, I have provided links to other resources where individuals have elaborated on these sections in more depth. These sources may offer relevant examples to help you better comprehend the content.

I would like to emphasize the importance of avoiding plagiarism in your Chevening application essays. Copying and pasting my provided examples or using the same wording could lead to disqualification. It's crucial to use these examples as a guide to structure your essays but ensure that you express your thoughts in your own words and from your unique perspective. This will help you maintain your authenticity and increase your chances of success in the application process.

Chevening asks four key essay questions;
  • Leadership & Influence Question
Chevening seeks individuals who will emerge as future leaders or influencers in their home countries. To meet this requirement, it's imperative to articulate your leadership and influencing skills with clarity and provide compelling examples from your own experiences.
You can do so by identifying your Key Leadership Experiences, describing your role, highlighting your achievements, demonstrating your influence (besides leadership positions, showcase instances where you were able to influence decisions or outcomes positively), connecting to your future goals. Remember that Chevening is interested not only in what you've accomplished but also in your potential to make a lasting impact in your home country. Your response should convey both your past achievements and your commitment to driving positive change in the future.
There are many approaches you can use to respond logically to these kind of question. There is one widely used called STAR (Situation, Tasks, Action, Results) or you can use the CAR (Challenge, Action, Result) Approach to respond to this question.
For instance,

I witnessed waterborne disease-related deaths in my Tanzanian village due to a lack of awareness. In 2017, I joined Raleigh Tanzania to address water and sanitation issues, leading a volunteer team and improving my leadership skills. This experience inspired me to co-found XXX organization, focusing on gender and water related issues in Tanzania rural communities. As a program manager and co-founder, I trained volunteers and team member on water projects development. The projects initiated by XXX company have positively influenced more than 2,000 people throughout Tanzania, offering essential hygiene amenities to students and delivering basic water treatment education to rural communities.
Identify the sentence in the preceding passage that pinpoints the Challenge, the Actions I took, and the Results. Proceed to apply this approach to your own narrative, gauging the results. Sharing your essay with friends is crucial, as self-reading often leads to unintentional gaps in our comprehension. This is why external feedback from friends is essential in essay refinement.

  • Networking Question
Chevening seeks candidates who possess robust skills in professional relationship building, individuals who will actively participate in the Chevening community and exert influence and leadership within their chosen field. Kindly describe your approach to cultivating and sustaining professional relationships, citing current practices and detailing how you intend to employ these abilities in the future.
As you delve into this section, be sure to emphasize your hands-on experience collaborating with a diverse array of individuals from various backgrounds. This will underscore your ability to effectively engage with and relate to people from different walks of life, showcasing your versatility in building professional relationships across diverse demographics.
For instance

"In my volunteering with XXX organization, I embarked on projects where I interacted closely with individuals from diverse nationalities and stayed with local XXX families. This immersive experience allowed me to gain insights into both XXX and XXX cultures, fostering friendships on both sides. As a team leader, I faced the challenge of working with teams composed of volunteers from different backgrounds, cultures, and motivations. I prioritized effective communication, division of roles, conflict resolution, and motivation to steer these diverse groups toward project success."

  • Studying in the UK Question
On this section, detail the rationale behind your selection of three specific university courses and establish the link between these choices, your previous academic or professional history, and your future ambitions. Ensure that your response does not reiterate the information already supplied in the work experience and education sections of this application. This serves as an opportunity for Chevening to gauge your thought process and alignment with your course choices.

For instance

"Studying a master's in XXX or YYY in the UK presents an opportunity to delve into critical global issues like XXX and YYY. The advanced technology and the UK's high educational standards enhance career prospects and pave the way for a promising future. These selected master's programs align with my needs, offering practical knowledge, robust research opportunities, and access to prominent figures in the field, including global organizations like XXX and XXX. Furthermore, studying in these universities will facilitate the improvement of my spoken English language skills."

Remember to use the reasons that align with what you want to achieve.
  • Career Plan Question
Chevening seeks applicants with well-defined post-study career intentions. Candidates should outline their immediate plans upon returning home and articulate their long-term career objectives, considering how these align with the UK government's initiatives in their country. Applicants are also encouraged to emphasize the initiatives and activities undertaken by the UK in their country within their field of interest.

Attention to Detail: What You Must Verify Before Submitting Essays

It's crucial to exercise extreme caution and attention to detail when completing your Chevening Scholarship application. Before submitting, I strongly advise you to thoroughly review your responses and ensure they meet all of Chevening's strict criteria. Even a single mistake could lead to disqualification, and there are many deserving applicants vying for limited spots. Some common errors to watch out for include inaccuracies in your pre-screen questions, email login details, personal information on the application form, meeting the required work experience hours (2,800 hours minimum), avoiding duplicate course entries at the same universities, completing the declaration accurately, adhering to word counts in application questions, avoiding repetition in essay answers, refraining from plagiarism (all applications undergo plagiarism checks), and maintaining proper use of the English language throughout your application. Your attention to detail could make all the difference in your Chevening application's success.

It's crucial to be meticulous when calculating your work experience hours for the Chevening Scholarship application. To make this process easier, you can utilize the provided link, which offers tools and guidelines to help you accurately determine your work experience hours. This precision is essential to ensure you meet Chevening's eligibility criteria.

The Final Step: Submitting Your Chevening Essays

Once you have thoroughly reviewed and completed all sections of your Chevening Scholarship application, ensuring you've covered all essential information, you can confidently proceed to submit your application by clicking the "SUBMIT" button. This marks the final step in the application process.
